What are the ingredients in this Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Salmon?
This is a simple, ingredient-forward recipe. Use fresh, high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. The basics are lemon, salmon, oil, salt, and spices.
- Lemon – zest before slicing; wash the lemon first since the zest is used.
- Sea salt – coarse or flaky sea salt works well; mixing salt with zest helps intensify the lemon flavor.
- Fresh ground black pepper – grind peppercorns right before using for maximum flavor.
- Garlic powder – optional but adds depth and savory balance.
- Avocado oil – a high smoke point oil; olive oil can be used instead.
- Wild salmon fillets – skin-on fillets are recommended to help retain moisture; two 4–6 ounce fillets are a good serving size.

How do you make Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Salmon?
Don’t overthink it — the air fryer makes this an easy, hands-off method. Follow these clear steps to get flaky, bright salmon every time.
1) Make the seasoning: zest one lemon and combine the zest with sea salt in a small bowl. Use the back of a spoon to lightly grind them together for about 10–15 seconds to release oils from the zest. Add the fresh ground black pepper and garlic powder and mix.
2) Prepare the salmon: bring fillets to room temperature, pat both sides dry with a paper towel, and coat all sides with oil. Place the fillets skin-side down and divide the seasoning between them, pressing gently to adhere the mix to the top and sides.

3) Air fry: arrange fillets skin-side down in a single layer without overlapping. Air fry at 350°F for 8–12 minutes depending on thickness. The salmon is done when it flakes easily with a fork or reaches 145°F internal temperature.
4) Rest and serve: let the fillets rest a couple of minutes, peel off the skin if desired, and serve with lemon wedges. Check for any pin bones depending on the cut quality.
What kind of salmon should you use?
Any salmon species will work with this method. Wild salmon is recommended for flavor and sustainability when available, but frozen fillets are fine — thaw before cooking.

Do you cook salmon with the skin on or off?
Cook salmon with the skin on to help retain moisture. The skin is easy to remove after cooking.
Can I use lemon pepper seasoning?
Yes — premade lemon pepper seasoning is fine. Fresh lemon zest and freshly ground pepper will give brighter, fresher flavor if you have them.
Some tips for cooking Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Salmon:
- Cook with the skin on to keep the salmon juicy.
- Thinner fillets finish closer to 8 minutes; thicker fillets may need 10–12 minutes.
- Coat the fillets in oil directly rather than spraying the basket for a cleaner result.
- Try to use fillets of similar thickness so they cook evenly.
How do you meal prep this recipe?
This dish is best fresh but can be prepared ahead in a few ways:
- Cooked salmon stores in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days; enjoy cold or reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 4–5 minutes.
- Prepare the seasoning mixture and zest the lemon up to 2 days ahead to save a few minutes on the day you cook.

What should you serve with this salmon recipe?
This salmon pairs well with a fresh salad, roasted or steamed vegetables like asparagus or summer squash, and potatoes or rice. Flaked over a salad is a personal favorite.

Alternative customization ideas:
This method and cook time work well with other seasonings and many types of fish. Most white or pink fish fillets about 1″ thick will cook at a similar pace.
Which air fryer do you recommend?
The recipe was tested in a larger-capacity air fryer; a 5.8 qt unit will easily fit up to four 4-ounce fillets without crowding. If you regularly cook for two or more people, choose a larger model.

Check out my favorite air fryer!
I use a larger-capacity air fryer in the kitchen. If you plan to cook for more than one person regularly, opt for a bigger size.
This size air fryer can likely fit four 4-ounce fillets in a single layer—just avoid crowding. Double the recipe for four fillets or cook two fillets if your air fryer is smaller.

Is this recipe freezer-friendly?
I don’t recommend freezing the cooked dish; it’s best enjoyed fresh. Raw salmon can be frozen in airtight packaging for several months and thawed before use.
How to store in the fridge:
Store cooked salmon in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
How to freeze:
Cooked salmon is not ideal for freezing. Freeze raw fillets in airtight or vacuum-sealed packaging for best long-term storage.
How to reheat:
Enjoy cold from the fridge or reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 4–5 minutes until warmed through.
