🔪 How to make Nutella puff pastry swirls

The recipe card with ingredient quantities and full instructions is at the bottom of the post.

One: Preheat the oven. Lay the ready-rolled puff pastry sheet flat and spread an even layer of Nutella, leaving about 1cm clear at the top and bottom edges.

Two: Roll the pastry tightly from the long side into a log. If you have time, chill the log in the fridge for 10 minutes to firm it up, which makes slicing easier.

Three: Using a sharp knife, slice the log into rounds about 1.5cm thick. Place the rounds on a lined baking sheet, leaving space between each swirl.

Four: Bake for about 15 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed and golden. Let cool briefly, then dust with icing sugar if desired.

Top Tips

  • Roll the pastry as tightly as you can to create neat, defined swirls.
  • Chilling the rolled log for 10 minutes makes for cleaner slices and helps the swirls hold their shape.
  • Brush with an egg wash before baking for a glossy finish, and dust with icing sugar after baking for extra sweetness.

🍴 Serving suggestions

Serve these Nutella snacks warm or at room temperature as party canapés, an after-school treat, or breakfast pastry. For a dessert serving, add fresh berries and a scoop of ice cream.

📖 Variations

  • Swap Nutella for raspberry jam, peanut butter, Biscoff spread, or mincemeat for a seasonal twist.
  • Add texture by sprinkling chopped hazelnuts over the spread before rolling.
  • Use gluten-free puff pastry to make these suitable for a gluten-free diet.

🥡 Storage

Store baked swirls in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Note that the pastry will gradually lose its crispness over time.

Reheat briefly in a hot oven to refresh the crispiness if you prefer them warm.

Freeze unbaked swirls on a baking sheet until firm, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Bake from frozen, adding about 5 minutes to the cooking time.
