What Is a Natural Acne Treatment?

This treatment begins by infusing beneficial dried herbs into jojoba oil, then combining the infused oil with beeswax to form a salve. The salve absorbs easily without feeling greasy and delivers the active plant compounds to the skin. The selected herbs and jojoba oil have properties that support clearer skin by helping reduce acne-causing bacteria and soothing inflammation.

Step 1: To create the infused oil

  • Double boiler or a saucepan with a heatproof bowl
  • Heatproof spatula
  • Wide-mouth pint-sized glass jar with lid

Ingredients to Make a Natural Acne Treatment

See the printable recipe section below for exact measurements. The core ingredients are:

  • Beeswax (pellets or grated)
  • Dried herbs:
    • Barberry root
    • Calendula flowers
    • Oregon grape root
  • Jojoba oil

These components work together: the roots provide berberine-rich compounds, calendula soothes inflammation and supports healing, and jojoba oil carries the actives while being non-comedogenic.

Special Offer for Natural Acne Ingredients

Farmhouse Teas offers herb sets with beeswax and tins to simplify sourcing these ingredients. If you choose to purchase a kit, follow the included instructions and use the ingredients listed above.

Jojoba oil is widely available from local and online retailers.

How to Make a Natural Acne Treatment

The process has two parts: (1) make the infused oil, and (2) turn the infused oil into a salve.

  1. Fill a pint jar with equal parts barberry root, oregon grape root, and calendula flowers. Do not pack the herbs tightly; leave some air space.
  2. Pour jojoba oil into the jar until there is about a half-inch of headspace, ensuring all plant material is submerged.
  3. Screw the lid on and place the jar in a warm spot to steep for six weeks. A sunny windowsill is suitable.
  4. After six weeks, strain the oil through a mesh strainer into a clean bowl. Do not press the herbs; allow the oil to drain naturally.
  5. Decant the infused oil into a tightly capped dark bottle and store it in a cool, dark place.
  6. To make the salve, warm a double boiler on the lowest setting. Add 1/2 cup of the infused oil and 1/8 cup beeswax to the top of the double boiler and heat gently until the beeswax melts, stirring occasionally.
  7. Remove from heat, optionally add essential oil (see variations), stir well, then pour the warm mixture into a four-ounce jar or small tins. Let cool, cap, and store in a cool, dry place.

Variations When Making a Natural Acne Treatment

To increase potency, try one of these options:

  • Add about 20 drops of helichrysum italicum essential oil to the warm salve after removing it from heat.
  • Substitute goldenseal root for the barberry and oregon grape roots (use a ratio of two parts goldenseal to one part calendula). Goldenseal is rich in berberine but is more expensive, so consider starting with the original herb combination.

Helichrysum and berberine-containing roots have strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that support clearer skin.

Natural Acne Treatment Tips

Warm the oil gently on the lowest heat to preserve delicate compounds. This is a natural product with a limited shelf life; use within one year for best results.

Storing a Natural Acne Treatment

Store the infused oil and finished salve in a cool, dark place away from moisture. Avoid storing in bathrooms, where humidity can degrade the product.

How to Use a Natural Acne Treatment

A small amount goes a long way. Always perform a patch test first.

  • For facial use: take a pea-sized amount, rub between palms, and apply to the face.
  • For larger areas: use a dime-sized amount, warm it in your hands, and apply to the affected area.

The Importance of First Performing a Patch Test

  1. Apply a small amount to the inner wrist and rub it in.
  2. If irritation appears, wash off immediately.
  3. If no reaction occurs, wait 24 hours to confirm.
  4. If still no irritation, continue daily application to the patch area for one week while monitoring for sensitivity.

Only use the salve more widely after a week with no signs of inflammation.

The Benefits of the Ingredients Used to Make a Natural Acne Treatment

Jojoba Oil Benefits

Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic and closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum, so it penetrates pores without clogging them. It helps balance sebum production, can reduce bacterial load, and soothes without causing irritation. Studies also note jojoba’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Barberry Root Benefits

Barberry root contains berberine, a compound shown to inhibit acne-related bacteria and support clearer skin.

Oregon Grape Root Benefits

Oregon grape root also supplies berberine, boosting the formula’s antibacterial effect.

Calendula Flowers Benefits

Calendula is known for soothing inflammation and supporting wound healing, which can help calm acne lesions and may reduce scarring.
