It’s the eve before school starts for our family — tomorrow my elementary-aged children head back to class. We still have a few items to check off our back-to-school list, but one simple task is already done: backpack tags. I designed a set of printable tags that are quick to assemble and add a personal touch to each child’s bag.
There are several easy ways to finish these tags so they last through the school year. You can laminate them for durability, insert them into plastic badge holders (I found inexpensive badge holders at a big-box store), cover them with clear contact paper, or simply attach them without added protection if you prefer a no-fuss option. Each method has its advantages: lamination offers the best protection from spills and wear, badge holders make it simple to swap tags, and contact paper is an affordable, do-it-yourself solution.
I created five designs intended for girls and five for boys, all featuring bold, fun colors and patterns that are easy to spot on a crowded coat rack. The tags are designed to be simple to use: print the sheet, cut out each design, write the necessary information on the back, glue or tape the front and back together, and then protect the tag as you prefer. Attach the finished tag using ribbon, elastic bands, twine, a keyring, or any small clip you have on hand. These tags also make great little classroom accessories for backpacks, lunch totes, and sports bags.
The printable sheets are formatted for easy home printing. Before printing, check your printer settings to ensure you’re using the correct paper size and print quality options for the best results. If you want particularly bright colors, use a slightly heavier cardstock rather than standard copy paper; cardstock will also help the tags hold up better before you laminate or encase them in plastic.
Each tag includes space for a name and contact information on the back. When filling them out, consider using a permanent marker or a fine-tipped pen to prevent smudging. If you plan to reuse the tag for future years or share it with siblings, leave a small blank area where you can place a removable name label or a piece of washi tape for temporary identification.
These backpack tags also make a thoughtful, low-cost gift for teachers to keep for field trips or to help identify class belongings at events. Teachers often appreciate small, practical items that make day-to-day management easier, and a set of matching tags can add a coordinated look to classroom supplies.
