Summer is best spent surrounded by family and friends, and for a food lover like me that means plenty of time at the grill and smoker.
These smoked Smithfield Craft Collection Yuengling Traditional Bratwurst served in a sauerkraut hoagie are a summer highlight—smoky, savory, and perfectly balanced.
On hot days there’s nothing better than classic BBQ: smoked sausages, grilled steaks, and everything that comes off the smoker. When food is prepared over smoke and flame, it just tastes like summer.

My family and I spend so much time outside during summer break grilling, and I suspect many households do, too. Today I’m sharing my favorite way to prepare Smithfield® Craft Collection™ Yuengling® Traditional Bratwurst.

I smoke the bratwurst to develop a deep mesquite flavor, then top them with sauerkraut that I cook in an iron skillet right on the grill. Everything is finished in a warm, toasted hoagie for a satisfying handheld meal.
These were a hit with my family—so good that they’ve already asked me to make them again. The combination of texture, seasoning, and smoke made the bratwursts stand out.
My husband, who lived for a time in Germany, declared these bratwursts authentic and delicious. The Smithfield bratwursts are infused with real Yuengling Traditional Lager and crafted from premium cuts of pork with a blend of sweet and savory spices. They contain no MSG.

The lager adds roasted caramel malt notes and a subtle sweetness that pairs beautifully with grilled foods. Beer and brats are a classic match for a reason.
Yuengling is America’s oldest craft brewery, known for a rich amber lager that complements smoked and grilled dishes exceptionally well.

Both Yuengling (Pottsville, PA) and Smithfield (Smithfield, VA) come from towns proud of their traditions. That heritage shows in the attention to quality and flavor—qualities that make this pairing a natural fit for family gatherings.

A cold Yuengling lager alongside these smoked bratwursts and sauerkraut on a toasted hoagie makes for a memorable summer meal. If you enjoy beer, smoked sausage, and tangy kraut, pick up these brats at Kroger and get ready for a great cookout.
Serve them at your next 4th of July, NASCAR event, or game-day gathering—these hoagies will make you a popular host.
What’s your favorite way to prepare bratwurst? Do you simmer them in beer before grilling or put them straight on the grill? We enjoy both methods, and leftovers make a fantastic breakfast with eggs.
You can find Smithfield Yuengling Bratwurst at your local Kroger.
